Matchbox Superfast Models
Matchbox Superfast Series toys were introduced in 1969 by Lesney Products as a response to Hot Wheels, Mattel’s new line of die-cast cars with fast-rolling wheels. Traditional Matchbox vehicles had solid axles and slower movement, which made them less appealing compared to the sleek, speedy Hot Wheels cars. To stay competitive, Lesney developed the Superfast range with thinner axles and low-friction wheels, allowing for much faster performance.
The Superfast line launched with modified versions of existing models fitted with the new wheels, followed by entirely new designs with vibrant colors and fantasy elements aimed at younger audiences.
Today, Superfast models are prized by collectors for their innovation, bright aesthetics, and role in die-cast toy history. The line has seen occasional re-releases, continuing its legacy in the world of miniature vehicles.
